5 Tips to Start Your Wellness Journey

Starting a health journey can be overwhelming….

I would know. I’ve lost over 90 lbs, stopped drinking, and allowed myself to love me. I’m gonna give you the skinny about what’s worked for me. Whether you want to lose some weight, have had a health scare, or are simply looking to feel more energetic, here are some tips for how to get going, so you can feel your best.

  1. Commit so you can become the you, you’ve always wanted to be. Culture, upbringing, social conditioning, habits, and subconscious thoughts have kept you from making real changes in your life. It is easy to stay stuck in the same patterns. Commit, and decide what is really important to you. Pick a thing or two you want to work on and get going! Fully commit to that thing. For me, it was cutting out dairy and refined carbohydrates and adding in high-quality protein and more veggies. [Check out Thrive Market for clean-eating foods delivered to your front door.] Consider starting small so you see success sooner, this can be a big motivator. For example, if you want to start exercising, commit to 3, 30-minute walks per week. Don’t say, I’m going to hit the gym 5x a week for an hour, you probably won’t stick with that. You can do it! Just pick a thing or two! I’m proof it works.

  2. Educate yourself about wellness. Wellness is the Foundation for Your Dreams.  How you take care of yourself affects how you show up for all your life experiences. Simple lifestyle choices can make a big impact on wellness. Most diseases and discomfort come from lifestyle choices. Get curious! Start learning about the ways to care for yourself internally, externally, and in your day-to-day environment. What is in your food / is it nutritionally dense and what is actually in the household products you use? Are you eating for nutrition for pleasure? Is there a more natural option for household and personal care products? [I love doTERRA’s line of products, they are a no-brainer low-tox option.] Our bodies are amazing machines, we forget that they are affected by all the big AND little things we do. You get to decide your quality of life, and get curious about what is contributing or taking away from your wellness.

  3. Minimize your choices, and simplify your life. You can make your life easier by simplifying your choices and the consequences that follow them. Pick a few things you’re no longer going to do so you don’t have to spend brain space weighing if you should or should not do them. For example, if you want to be more fit. Well, fit people probably don’t order dessert every time they go out [and you’re probably beating yourself up about that choice to get dessert after you order it]. Make the decision, “I’m a person that does not eat dessert.” Make it a non-negotiable item. Note: Healthy, happy folks have a good sense of self and speak to themselves kindly. When you cut the negative self-talk, it will make the journey easier to become the next version of you. Whatever that thing is you beat yourself up about, stop it. Pick a few habits you’re ready to leave behind.

  4. Let SHIT Go to make space for new. Have you ever wondered what your life could look like if you let more shit go? When we hold on to what we don’t need, we’re limiting the space for new things to come into our lives. What is weighing you down? A great place to start is cleaning out some spaces in your house. If you’re starting a health journey, remove the junky food temptations or make a designated space for them if other people in your house are still going to partake. Physically cleaning out a closet or room in your house can help, too. When you show your brain that it is possible to get rid of physical stuff, you are training yourself to believe you can also get rid of old behavior patterns that are no longer serving you. Don’t put limits on what you can and can’t do, based on what you’ve always done. You are capable of new things that serve you well.

  5. Lastly, when you’re feeling stuck… Get some help! There are no rewards given for doing it all yourself.

    Suggestions for free help:

    • Get to know yourself! Journal and reflect. Notice your patterns. Celebrate your accomplishments so you can keep building your trust and confidence in yourself.

    • Follow empowering people on social media who are on a similar journey.

    • Know someone that has had their own success? Reach out to a friend or community partner for coffee.

    • Seek an accountability partner. This could be a friend or loved one.

    • Wellness doesn’t just happen. Make a schedule, and prioritize what is important. Perhaps that is grocery shopping for healthy food or scheduling movement. You’re helping yourself here by eliminating the option to waiver on your decisions because you’ve already made the commitment to put it on your schedule.

    • Ask other people in your house/community for help if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed. My husband and I cook together at least one night a week.
